Circle of Towers

It was just announced Friday that the Madison Square Park Conservancy sold off a valuable piece of art,  Sol LeWitt’s “Circle with Towers” structure, to the Landmarks public art program of the University of Texas at Austin. Sol LeWitt is considered the founder of the Minimal and Conceptual art  movements. The structure will be unveiled and sit at the entrance to the Dell Computer Science Hall and the Bill & Melinda Gates Computer Science Complex which is slated to open in September 2012.

According the news release, Sol LeWitt donated the piece in 2005 to the Madison Square Park Conservancy to establish an endowment for the park’s public art program. It is unclear if the work was meant to be displayed in Madison Square Park or was intended to sell. It was created and on display in Madison Square Park from May 1st, 2005 – February 20th, 2006.

The price paid was reported to be $700,000.
