There is a new high-end rental building in Nomad – The Centurian Building (1182 Broadway at 28th Street) was heavily renovated over the last couple years and now is available for move-ins. It’s one of the highest-end rental buildings currently in Nomad and is situated between the blocks which house the Nomad Hotel and the Ace Hotel.
It was not too long ago that this building was busted and residents were forced to immediately vacate, because unbeknownst to tenants, the building was allegedly illegally converted from a manufacturing building to a rental building.
In fact, I lived there from 2004-2007, and had no idea it was an illegal rental building. I loved it back then because it was a big open real loft space with high ceilings and big windows, even if the street scene below was crazy at times with wholesalers/importer/exporters, impromptu freestyle street rap sessions on a static-y amplifier, and huge counterfeit busts in the various nearby buildings.
But then the Ace Hotel took over 29th Street, the Nomad Hotel set up between 27th and 28th, and all the retail (Opening Ceremony, Maison Kitsuné, Jung Lee home decor) and restaurants (No 7 Sub, SweetGreen, John Dory, The Breslin, The Nomad) that followed began the transformation of that stretch of Broadway. Needless to say a lot has changed, even if there are still a ton of wholesalers and import /export shops uglifying some amazing architecture from the early 1900’s.
So the original illegal rental building was discovered by DoB, shut down, and now has re-emerged as a beautiful, luxury rental building.
It’s a fairly stunning renovation with high ceilings, sub-zero refrigerators, Bosch washer and dryers, and Zuma soaking tubs. Units reportedly start around $5800 and go way up from there.
