241 5th Avenue plans switching from prospective hotel to condos

According to the Wall Street Journal, the 4-story building at 241 5th Avenue (between 27th and 28th street) just north of Madison Square Park will no longer become a 100-room hotel, but rather a 20-story condo building with approximately 48 units. The Flatiron Hotel ready to open, but on the market

Word is in that the boutique Flatiron Hotel (1141 Broadway at 26th Street) is finished and ready for occupancy…except that it is also on the market for a quick sale. It was just completed, features 64 rooms, a lobby with a 20,000 gallon aquarium, space for a restaurant, and has a 200 square foot rooftop ready for a lounge.Originally it appeared to be a Meyer Jabara hotel.

[Flatiron hotel marquis 2] The rooms are being delivered turnkey with jacuzzi bath or Swiss rainfall showers, surround sound entertainment systems, LCD tvs, marble bathrooms, and the hotel is said to be ready to open within 30 days of closing.

You will recall there was big noise when the massive lobby fish tank was first revealed. The hotel will be the latest addition to the neighborhood, following the Ace Hotel (Broadway and 29th). the MAVe Hotel (27th and Madison), and the re-branded Fashion 26 (152 West 26th Street), with the Nomad Hotel coming soon.

The hotel is being marketed by Berkley Acquisitions.

NOMAD’s MAvE Hotel in distress

According to the Real Deal, The MAvE Hotel (62 Madison Avenue at 27th Street) is in distress.

The boutique hotel opened in July 2009 and was one of the first of a string of new boutique hotels planned for the area (Ace Hotel, Nomad hotel, Flatiron Hotel).

Hotel Chelsea to become condos?

Curbed brings word that the legendary Hotel Chelsea (222 West 23rd street), which has been on the market, may become a condo/hotel if David Edelstein of Tristar Capital is able to purchase it. read more at Curbed and Page 6. Music at the Ace Hotel – KEXP and Vulpes Vulpes

Wednesday-Friday this week the Ace Hotel (20 West 29th Street between 5th Ave and Broadway) will broadcast live sets from a dozen bands via legendary Seattle radio station KEXP (get their free podcasts in itunes if you want some great independent music). It will run 10am-about 4pm each day followed by live dj sets from KEXP’s John Richards.

Plus, Brooklyn’s Vulpes Vulpes will play every Sunday at the Ace in October at 8:30pm, joined this Sunday by Nightmare and the Cat. Check out a live video of Vulpes Vulpes:

Famous Hotel Chelsea for sale

Built in 1883 to the west of Madison Square Park, the Hotel Chelsea (222 West 23rd street) is one of the most legendary hotels in New York City, and according to the Wall Street Journal, it is up for sale. A popular temporary home among writers, artists, and musicians, the hotel is apparently in need of a modernization, and the current owners are ready to pass it on to new owners.

Among other things, it was the site where author Dylan Thomas died, the girlfriend of Sid Vicious died, Warhol filmed a movie, and Arthur C. Clarke wrote ’2001: A Space Oddyssey’ among other things. You can read the history of the hotel and it’s famous guests at www.hotelchelsea.com/history.php
