The Caulfield bar and restaurant abruptly closes down

The Caulfield bar and restaurant at 119 East 27th Street (between Park Avenue South and Lexington Avenue) has closed down, without warning. Their twitter and facebook pages don't mention it, and the windows are covered up at the bar. The Caulfield had only been open since November 2011, and featured a full bar plus a Mexican menu which seemed to depart from the Catcher in the Rye namesake. It was apparently owned by the guys behind the Vig Bar, the Volstead, and Choza Taquería. Anyone have info on what happened?

McDonald’s to go in next to One Madison Park condo building

Back before there was a One Madison Park glass condo tower, there was a McDonald's in its space. They left in 2005 to make way for the new development, but there was reportedly a clause somewhere in the transaction that ensured McDonalds would have a space in One Madison Park states the Real Deal (seems very odd they would agree to this, but ok). Well through the market crash, bankruptcy, and ownership changes, McDonalds got edged out of the location but ultimately got a cash settlement. Well they are back. The Real Deal reports that McDonald's signed a 99 year lease at 26 East 23rd Street right next door to One Madison Park. It's the space that recently housed a Wendy's. I think it probably goes without saying that tenants of the high-end One Madison Park would have probably preferred a different neighbor...

Panel on charter schools for our community Monday evening

Community Board 5 (which covers the Flatiron and Madison Square Park neighborhoods) is hosting a panel on charter schools tonight (Monday, May 20th) at 6pm at Xavier High School (30 West 16th Street between 5th ad 6th Avenues).

It will be a lively discussion with experts including Priscilla Wohlstetter (The Teachers College, Department of Education and Policy Analysis), Halley Potter (The Century Foundation), Lisa Donlan and Shino Tanikawa (CEC Districts 1 & 2), Patrice King (Center for Educational Innovation - Public Education Association), Christina Collins (The United Federation of Teachers, Alliance of Charter Teachers & Staff), and Valerie Babb (New York City Charter School Center).
