There is a new preschool opening up in the neighborhood this September – The Montessori at Flatiron (5 West 22nd Street near 5th Avenue). The school is for 2-5 years old kids and follows the principles of Maria Montessori, which you can learn more about in a video on their website: www.themontessorischools.org. The Montessori at Flatiron is affiliated with the La Prima Casa Montessori schools in Miami.

It’s a private school which requires an application (request one here), and much like other private schools in Manhattan, it is expensive. Tuition is $18,950/year for half day 2 year olds (either 9am-noon or noon-3pm) and $25,950 for full day 2 year olds (9am-3pm). For 3-5 year olds, a full day is $24,950. They do offer financial aid though on a case by case basis. From what we understand they are currently taking applications for September, 2013 and September, 2014. There will initially be space for 100 kids.

Montessori at Flatiron will be run by Nick Combemale, who was COO of the well-regarded Ross Institute in East Hampton, as well as for the Morriss Center School in Bridgehampton.

The school will consist of two floors, including a play area and garden (see rendering below).
