Beecher’s Handmade Cheese (900 Broadway at 20th Street), just beat out 1,710 other cheeses at the American Cheese Society 2012 ACS Judging
& Competition to be named Best in Show, in other words, the best cheese in North America. Specifically it was their Flagsheep cheese, a mix of cow’s milk and sheep’s milk, that took the top prize. (By the way don’t confuse the limited supply of Flagsheep cheese with their Flagship cheese.)
The Flagsheep will almost certainly sell out now that the award has been announced, but you might be able to get some at the shop right here in the neighborhood. Stop by or call them (212.466.3340) to check on their supply. It does not seem to be available by mail order.
If you haven’t been into Beecher’s, they make cheese onsite and have a cafe with sandwiches and such, as well as a Cellar next to the cheese cave where you can have a glass of wine as well as small plates of food (and their famous Mac and Cheese). You can get a grilled cheese on the top level in about 5 minutes and they are excellent. Personally we love the Grilled Flagship Cheese with Fig jam and the Grilled Flagship Cheese with Black Forest ham.
