It seems the Big Apple BBQ is up for review again by the CB5 Joint Parks and Consents and Variances Meeting, and a public hearing is scheduled for Thursday, April 4th (6pm) to discuss Union Square Hospitality Group’s application for the event. The Big Apple BBQ is currently scheduled to take place in Madison Square Park from June 8th-9th.
The extremely popular Big Apple BBQ takes place each year in Madison Square Park, bringing approximately 20 of the best pitmasters in the United States to set up food stands and serve up different styles of barbeque ribs, chicken, pork, beef and more for about $8 a plate.
The Community Board 5 Parks committee voted to ban the event in 2011 allegedly because they feel it is too similar to other street fairs and blocks pedestrian traffic. What is unclear is whether this opinion just reflects their own feelings about the event or reflects the feeling of the neighboring community as well.
Feel free to attend the meeting to voice your opinion (Thursday at 6pm at the SGI-USA NY Culture Ctr. 7 East 15th Street) or send in your comments to firstname.lastname@example.org.
