Popular vegetarian Southern-Indian restaurant Chennai Garden (129 East 27th Street between Park and Lex) has closed down, but there is substantial remodeling work being done in the place and we have heard that they may be re-opening as a non-vegetarian Indian restaurant.

The owner also owns Tiffin Wallah just a block away, so you can still get your fix of authentic vegetarian Indian food (in addition to all of the other places in the area). Interestingly, Chennai Garden went through a remodel in late 2011, but the bright pink walls are now gone. Chennai Garden always held its own in the Best Indian Restaurant near Madison Square Park reader awards, but as you can see from the results, it’s very competitive.
