Cult favorite Maffei’s pizza (688 6th Avenue at 22nd Street), which has been around since 1975, appears to have shuttered. The cheap eats spot had a diehard cult following of those who said it was some of the best pizza in the city, particularly the Grandma slice.
They did some remodeling in there earlier this year, and when they re-opened things felt different, but now the walls are papered up. No idea yet if they plan on re-opening in the future. The surge of new spots for pizza in the Flatiron (click map on right) in the last few years has been extraordinary, so there were bound to be a few casualties.
