One of our favorite things in the neighborhood right now are the ‘Come Buy’ Taiwanese iced bubble teas (251 5th Avenue at 28th Street). It’s a borderline addiction every afternoon to go down and get a Peach oolong tea (with ‘bubbles’ of course) or the Taro Milk Tea (it’s like drinking some sort of liquid Trix cereal), or a Triple Q Passion Blast, or the Bubble Milk tea (tastes like regular tea with milk on ice), or even the Chocolate Drink.
If you haven’t had bubble tea, it is said to be a Taiwanese creation containing a tea base mixed with fruit, juice and/or milk, and often has tapioca balls floating around in it. There is something about those tapioca bits that really makes drinking an iced tea more enjoyable. Unlike some bubble tea spots, this place is clean and modern and very popular.
Whatever tea you get, get it with bubbles, but we recommend asking for 30% sugar in all of these or else it is way to sweet. The nice thing about Come Buy is that they let you adjust the sugar level . So you can have something as light as a sugar free Peach Oolong Tea, or as rich as a Snickers Smoothie. Pictures here is the Triple Q Passion Blast.
Watch the operation while you are in there too. They single serve brew your tea like an espresso shot, mix the juice or ‘bubbles’ and then throw it in a sealer to seal it before handing it to you.
We have posted the entire Come Buy bubble tea menu here. Be careful though – it can easily become an afternoon habit!
