(UPDATE JUNE 1st- They are quietly open and serving). The Eataly rooftop brewery restaurant Birreria is set to officially open Friday, June 3rd, and MadParknews was fortunate enough to get a sneak preview of it tonight. (CLICK any image to get a full view)

Birreria is located on the rooftop of Eataly (200 5th Avenue, between 23rd and 24th street), with views of the Empire State, the Flatiron building, and the Met Life Clock Tower. It seats about 160 and there is a long bar for standing, but with limited elevators they will manage the crowds from below.

They will serve 3 beers made in carbonated casks right on the rooftop, headed by brew-master Brooks Caretta. The beer will be ales with a twist…one will be a pale ale with thyme, one will be a wheat beer with actual peppercorns in it, and a third will be an English mild style brewed with the current Italian craft brewer trend of using chestnuts. We sampled the house beer and it was very refreshing on this nice spring evening, especially paired with their house sausage and fried mushrooms.

And let’s not forget that they will also serve American craft brew favorite Dogfish Ales, Italian craft brew Birra del Borgo Extra ReAle, Taquamari, Sierra Nevada, Moretti, and Baladin (Super and Rora).

The menu by Chef Alex Pilas will revolve around food that goes well with the beer. They will have four house made sausages, 3 braised pork shoulders (changing preparations by season), formaggi, a couple salads and an entire section dedicated to mushrooms, and a grill section. In summary, it’s meat heavy, bold spices, basic preparations, and meant to be paired with the craft beers.

Also of note, the roof is retractable, so Birreria will be open year round for lunch and dinner.

From the rumor-mill…while the official opening is Friday June 3rd, they will almost definitely make an unannounced soft opening before then, so keep your eyes open. You can find the elevators to Birreria on the 23rd street side of Eataly, back near the bottled beverage aisles.

And here is some panorama video of the rooftop…
