Multiple reports have stated that Fairway Market will open a new store at 766 Sixth Avenue (between 25th and 26th Street), one block west of Madison Square Park. (Thanks to reader Bill B for the tip. UPDATE: Another reader, Avery N, says it is definite, and that she has “seen Fairway employees with blueprints and they have already marked up the space for shelving.”).
It’s the location that used to be occupied by Gracious Home, and then later by the Knoll Sample Sale, the ongoing American Apparel Warehouse Sale and the Halloween popup store. You may recall Fairway recently opened another store at 2nd Avenue and 30th Street, aka Fairway Kips Bay.
If they do in fact open in this location, it’s a huge win for Nomad, North Chelsea, Madison Square Park, and areas north. Yes there is Whole Foods at 7th and 24 Street, and Eataly (24th and 5th), Trader Joes (6th Avenue and 21st Street) and a Morton Williams (Park and 22nd), but unbelievably there is NO traditional grocery store above 25th Street that we know of between Park Avenue South and 8th Avenue all the way up into the 40’s (and possibly further!). Plus in recent years there have been a dozen new rental apartment buildings and condo buildings in this same area. They would do well here, grabbing shoppers from the north.
Founded in the 1930’s. Fairway is hugely popular and has an “extensive selection of fresh, natural and organic products, prepared foods and hard-to-find specialty and gourmet offerings, along with a full assortment of conventional groceries.”
