cafe_grumpy_signOk, so it’s a little west of the Madison Square Park and Flatiron areas, but Cafe Grumpy (224 West 20th Street between 7th/8th Ave) is worth the walk when you have an extra 10 minutes or so. Each coffee is made on the spot one cup at a time using a Clover machine. Temperature controlled and timed for optimal brew, it works a bit like an automated french press and pushes the used coffee grounds out of the top of the machine, leaving a near perfect, fresh and rich cup of coffee.

Their three locations (two in Brooklyn) remain some of the only cafes in New York with Clover machines. They also won Time Out’s Reader’s choice for Best Coffee in New York in 2009. Only drawback is because each cup is brewed individually, it take a couple minutes to make, but it’s worth the wait if you have the time.

Until Stumptown opens in the Ace Hotel to give it a challenge, Cafe Grumpy serves up the best coffee near Madison Square Park and the Flatiron.
