Naturally Tasty diner (234 5th Avenue on the corner of 27th Street) in Nomad has had its metal shutters down now for a few weeks, and the phone number is disconnected, and they are gutting the place inside, so we are assuming they are closed for good. No note or any other info was found at the restaurant. If anyone knows something, please email info@MadParkNews.com.
The throwback diner had a menu that you might find in a lot of the diners in the city, and although it did not have the 1920’s authenticity of say an Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop just down the street (174 5th Avenue), it did have a packed lunch crowd of local workers and tourists walking from the Empire State Building down Fifth Avenue.
It is a prime corner spot for a new restaurant, just a block up from Madison Square Park on 5th Avenue, with a new high-rise condo building going in across the street, 200 units at the Grand Madison a short block down, and a spot on the tourist path during the summer. Hint to any restauranteurs – we already have lots of Italian restaurants and pizza places around Madison Square Park, as well as a lot of high-end restaurants that are not places most people are going to frequent because it is just too expensive to do so very often. Open another one with caution.
Things that could work – a great brunch spot (think Clinton Street Baking Company or the always packed Penelope/tbsp/Friend of a Farmer/Breslin Brunch) or a stroller-friendly place with good food (we are seeing more strollers than ever in the neighborhood as it becomes more residential and there aren’t many places to go like you see in Brooklyn and in other neighborhoods) or a new good lunch spot or a new diner. The neighborhood could use a good Mexican food spot as well (not high-end Mexican, just good authentic flavors). Our 2 cents.Naturally Tasty diner on 5th Avenue closes its doors,
