Birch Coffee looks like it will be opening opened today at 7am for coffee and tea, bringing more good coffee (hello Stumptown) to the area north of Madison Square Park (7 East 27th Street at the Gershwin Hotel). In addition to coffee, they will have a menu of sandwiches, salads, and breakfast foods. The kitchen will open Monday.

They will also host events, such as a daily meditation from noon-1pm, and broadcast music such as the Global DJ Broadcast with Markus Schulz and Armin van Buuren’s A State of Trance.

After years of cookie cutter chain coffee shops, Birch shows it has a perspective, shares it with the neighborhood, and looks like it will put the soul back into the neighborhood coffee shop. While it may seem like competition for Stumptown, the area north of the Flatiron through lower midtown has been in such dire need of good coffee, that there is easily room for both cafes, especially given that both Birch and Stumptown seem to be passionate about good coffee and creating nice atmospheres to enjoy a cup.
