Greek steakhouse Parea Prime (36 East 20th Street between Broadway and Park Avenue South), formerly Parea, has closed, but we learn from Grubstreet that a casual offshoot of popular Italian spot Il Mulino will open in its place.
Word is they will aim for an opening in July.
When Ciano closed we questioned the culinary and financial guts of opening yet another Italian restaurant (even a good one) in the Flatiron, but Il Mulino should have the ability to pull it off and succeed, especially if it is a more casual version of the original Il Mulino.
It’s a tough neighborhood for Italian spots, with tons of competition from heavy hitters like A Voce, Maialano, Manzo, Birierra, the rest of Eataly, plus Zio, Lulu & Me, SD26, Granduca di Sicillia trattoria, Aselina, Basta Pasta, Brio Downtown, i Trulli, Magia Osteria Italiana, and pizza spots Forcella, Waldy’s, La Pizza Fresca, Grimaldis, Zero Otto Nove, Tappo, and Eataly le Pizze. The original Il Mulino is excellent though, so we are looking forward to this new opening.
