Typically when a restaurant closes in the neighborhood, we aren’t totally surprised. Maybe the concept didn’t work, the competition was stiff, the pricing was wrong, or maybe it had a good long run but was not as popular as it once was. But Tamarind (43 East 22nd street) consistently was chosen as the best Indian food in the Flatiron, so we were very surprised to hear that they shut down on December 31st.
Now it was a bit of a special circumstance, because the building they are in is set for demolition and construction of a new residential tower. They also have another Tamarind location in Tribeca where they will be relocating their Flatiron staff. But it is nonetheless disappointing to lose from our neighborhood some of the best fine Indian cuisine in New York City and the United States. Personally we loved Tamarind for their authentic and refined Indian food. Fortunately we still have some great options at every price point, including Junoon and Dhaba.
Tamarind will be missed in the neighborhood.
