The first place we hit for NYC Restaurant Week 2012 was Junoon (27 West 24th Street), which also just took 2nd place as Best Indian food in the neighborhood by MadParkNews readers. Junoon features high-end, refined Indian cuisine in a beautiful space and we could not resist coming in for the 3-course fixed price lunch for $24.07. (NOTE: Restaurant Week at Junoon is ONLY for lunch on weekdays). If you haven’t been into Junoon and want to, this is a more affordable way to try the restaurant. Junoon features 5 cooking styles of India: Tandoor (Clay Oven), Sigri (Open Fire Pit), Patthar (Stone Cooking), Tawa (Cast Iron Cooking) and Handi (Pot Cooking).

They offer a pretty robust menu for Restaurant Week, with lots of apps and entrees to choose from. We tried the Piri-Piri Shrimp and the Sunchoke Shorba to start. The Piri-Piri Shrimp features 3 large shrimp in a Goan chili sauce with jicama and avocado. We know from a prior visit that they really know how to cook a shrimp, and the spicy sauce on this dish does not disappoint. The Sunchoke soup is spiced with cumin and coriander, and is a great flavorful starter for a cold winter day.

For entrees we went with the Nadru Kofte and couldn’t resist trying their take on a Lobster Roll. The Nadru Kofte are dumplings filled with lotus root and Indian Cheese in a sauce that will have you reaching for the naan to scoop up. The Lobster Roll is made with fresh chunks of lobster and doesn’t differ too much in flavors or style than what you might find at a seafood spot. You even get onion rings. Honestly though I would stick with their Indian dishes where you are going to get bold authentic flavors (they make all of their own spices in their Spice Room).

Finally we had the Cardamom Kulfi (sort of like ice cream) and Chocolate Caramel Tart for dessert. Both were an excellent way to end the meal. Service as always at Junoon is impeccable and it’s perfect for a business lunch or a lunch with friends. Book your Junoon Restaurant Week lunch at www.opentable.com/junoon-restaurant.
