For some of the best Indian food in New York City, try Tamarind (43 East 22nd Street) in the heart of the Flatiron. Tamarind features excellent authentic dishes made from the finest ingredients in an upscale, but not formal, setting. They cover many styles from across the spectrum of Indian cuisine and beyond their blending of regional Indian flavors, they stay clear of the trend towards fusion seen in many other up-market international restaurants. It’s just great food and amazing service. The owner even goes table to table to check in on you and your meal, a personal touch long lost by most other restaurants.

Standout dishes include Raji’s Rajastahni Sooley (super tender grilled  lamb marinated in lemon and garlic), almost anything out of their behind-glass tandoor, the garlic nan, and the Jhinga Angarey (jumbo prawns marinated in yogurt and roasted chiles and cilantro), but you really can’t go wrong. American favorites like chicken tikka masala and saag paneer are also very good.
