chicken tikka

Desi Galli opened in mid-May of this year, and we finally got a chance to try the new Indian street food spot at 101 Lexington (at 27th Street). The nice thing here is that everything on the menu is under $10, so it makes a great option for a quick lunch, to stay or to take away.

But more than being affordable, the food is also full of flavor, and tries to stay honest to authentic and soulful Indian street food. The Galli Signature Rolls and the Small Chops are probably the best place to start, and we tried the Paneer bhurjee roll (grated Indian cottage cheese, with tomatoes and green chilies in a parantha) and the Chicken Tikka roll (grilled marinated chicken, in spiced yogurt and Galli spices in a parantha). The chicken tikka roll was the favorite of these two.

samosa chaat

We also tried the Samosa Chaat (samosa with Desi style beans, yogurt and chutney) and the Aloo Piyaaz Chaat (mashed Desi Potatoes with pickled onions and coriander leaves). Of these we preferred the Samosa Chaat.

They also serve Masala Chai, Indian Coffee, and Mango Lassis.

You can also choose your bread and filling for a customizable lunch sandwich. Here is the full Desi Galli menu: http://desi-galli.com/DesiGalliMenuFinal.pdf. And yes they do deliver.

Desi Galli was opened by the owner of Bhatti Indian Grill and his partners. There is often a line at lunch time, but you can get right in and order after about 1:30pm. It’s definitely worth adding to your lunch time rotation. Because they are open from 11am-11pm (1am on weekends) it’s also good for a quick dinner or late night snack.
