Shorty’s Authentic Philly Steaks & Sandwiches opened up in October at 66 Madison (between 27th and 28th streets), just north of Madison Square Park after having success at their first NYC location in Hell’s Kitchen.  They serve up steak sandwiches, chicken steak sandwiches and roast pork and chicken cutlet sandwiches, all Philly style. The freshly baked Italian rolls are shipped in from Philadelphia, and they won’t use wheat bread or pitas for your sandwich.

We finally tried Shorty’s, albeit through delivery (Yes, they deliver!). So it’s probably even better at the restaurant, but we really enjoyed our food. Of course we had to try a Cheesesteak ($9), and we had ours with American cheese (apologies to all the whiz purists). First off the bread is fresh and good, and the steak is nicely portioned and flavorful mixed in with the cheese. I have done the Pat’s thing in Philly and of course that place is an institution, but considering this is around the corner, it’s an awesome local substitute.

But the surprises were elsewhere on the menu. I loved the Broccoli Rabe sandwich ($9), with melted provolone on the same bread. I didn’t expect to love it but I did (shhh…possibly even better than the cheesesteak).

And finally the Italian fries ($5). Wow! Sprinkled with parmesan, salt, and some sort of herb, I could not stop eating them. Crisp on the outside, mashed core, these are possibly the best fries I have had in the city. Click the photo of the fries (below) to enlarge it and tell me they don’t look delicious.

Shorty’s doubles as a solid neighborhood sport’s bar with lots of flat screens and a wide selection of beers. They even have a weekday deal of a cheesesteak and a beer for $12.

Stop in and check it out for yourself. Or order up delivery for home or office. Yelpers give it 4 stars.
