It’s the last few hours of Summer Streets right now (ends at 1pm!) They have closed down 6.9 miles of streets from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park, so you can walk, run, bike or play without any cars. It’s one of the great events each summer in New York City! Every year it makes us wish we had a giant pedestrian and bike avenue for car-free transportation. It’s awesome to be able to ride up to Central Park without fear of getting hit by a car.
For the most part it runs of Park Avenue, and passes right by the Madison Square Park area on Park Avenue South.
We even have one of the big official stops (the Midtown Rest Stop) right at 25th and Park where you can do the following:
- Enjoy Whole Foods Market City Picnic, with samples from Whole Foods Market vendors
- Rent a free bike courtesy of Bike and Roll
- Rent rollerblades for free courtesy of Rollerblade
- Get a free bike helmet from DOT Safety Education
You can also of course bring your own bike or roller-blades (so you won’t have to wait in the sometimes very long lines to get one).
Also, this year they will have an interactive art installation in the Park Avenue tunnel (Here is a video).
Here is the official Summer Streets route:
