The Wall Street Journal reports that the buyer of the famous Hotel Chelsea (222 West 23rd street) is real estate investor Joseph Chetrit, who has had experience in renovating historic hotels. The report says he intends to renovate it and keep it as a hotel.

Built in 1883 to the west of Madison Square Park, the Hotel Chelsea (222 West 23rd street) is one of the most legendary hotels in New York City. A popular temporary home among writers, artists, and musicians, the hotel is apparently in need of a modernization.

Among other things, it was the site where author Dylan Thomas died, the girlfriend of Sid Vicious died, Warhol filmed a movie, and Arthur C. Clarke wrote ’2001: A Space Odyssey’ among other things. You can read the history of the hotel and it’s famous guests at www.hotelchelsea.com/history.php.
