Drone footage of devastating St. Sava Orthodox Cathedral fire just west of Madison Square Park

The massive church fire at the 161-year-old St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Cathedral (25th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues) was reportedly caused by candles that were not fully extinguished, and not by some act of terror as feared when other Orthodox churches globally also caught fire on Orthodox Easter. The church was the first Serbian Orthodox Church in the United States.

Fortunately, no deaths were caused by the fire.

To see the extent of the damage, Slate has pulled together some drone footage showing the fire and its devastation.

Le Coq Rico restaurant opens at 30 East 20th Street in the Flatiron

VN:F [1.9.22_1171]
Rating: 3.8/5 (6 votes cast)

French chef Antoine Westermann has opened a new restaurant, Le Coq Rico, at 30 East 20th Street in the Flatiron. You may recall this spot as being the home of the beloved neighborhood dive bar No Idea, which had a name night calendar each month where those of that name could get free drinks.

As you might imagine from the name, the emphasis here is bird, and specifically whole birds. Chicken and duck are pervasive on the menu from mousse and terrines to foie as well as whole rotisserie birds for 4. Cornish hens and Guinea fowl also make appearances. Some birds are even found in combination plates with seafood (Roasted Cod & Smoked Duck Breast, Maine Lobster & Chicken fricasseée), which reminds us of a Simpson’s episode in which Moe asks the waiter “Bring us your finest food, stuffed with your second-finest” and gets lobster stuffed with tacos. However Chef Westermann is no joke, earning 3 Michelin stars at prior restaurant “Le Buerehiesel” in Strasbourg, France and reportedly owns 4 restaurants in Paris, including a Le Coq Rico in Montmarte. Le Coq Rico is quite popular in Paris (4.5 stars on Yelp) and should do very well in the Flatiron.

We have not eaten there yet, but will certainly review it here if we do.

Here is the lunch and dinner menu: www.lecoqriconyc.com/bistro-lunch

And they also serve brunch: www.lecoqriconyc.com/bistro-brunch

A Zuber luxury wallpaper showroom to open at 4 West 19th Street in the Flatiron

VN:F [1.9.22_1171]
Rating: 4.0/5 (1 vote cast)

We get word that the luxury wallpaper/fabric maker Zuber will open a showroom at 4 West 19th Street in the Flatiron. The space had been the site of restaurants Bazar Mediterranean Bistro and Nasha Rasha.

The French company has been around since 1797, and is said to hand print the wallpaper using the traditional wood block method of printing. You can browse some of their wallpapers at www.zuber.fr/ancien_site/english/menu_produits.html

Jackie Kennedy was apparently a big fan, and used Zuber wallpaper to decorate the White House. Something tells us we will see quite a bit of Zube wallpaper installed in condos around the Flatiron in the coming years.
