The annual James Beard awards were announced yesterday for the best restaurants and chefs in the USA. Madison Square Park restaurant Eleven Madison Square Park and the Flatiron’s ABC Kitchen dominated taking home the folliwng of the biggest awards:

Best New Restaurant: ABC Kitchen (35 East 18th St). Chef/Owner: Jean-Georges Vongerichten and Owner: Phil Suarez
Outstanding Restaurant Award: Eleven Madison Park (11 Madison Avenue). Owner: Danny Meyer
Outstanding Pastry Chef Award: Angela Pinkerton, Eleven Madison Park (11 Madison Avenue)

The James Beard award nominees for 2011 have been announced and include a few Madison Square Park/Flatiron area restaurants and chefs. Eater compiled a list of the top 12 restaurants with the “Hottest Clientele”, and for what it’s worth, our neighborhood’s very own ABC Kitchen (35 East 18th St) and the Breslin (20 west 29th street) made the cut.

Three restaurants in the neighborhood are nominated for Time Out’s Food & Drink Awards and you can cast your vote. ABC Kitchen is up for Best new restaurant. Eataly Pizza is up for Best New Pizza. The John Dory Oyster Bar is up for Best Comeback and April Bloomfield is up for Chef of the [...]

Thanks to all that voted for their favorite food in the neighborhood for the last year. We cleaned up the vote jammers and duplicates and here are the results:

Best New Restaurant of 2010 – ABC Kitchen (runner-up was No.7 Sub and then the John Dory Oyster Bar)

Best Burger of 2010 – ABC Kitchen (runner-up was the Shake Shack and then the Breslin)

Best Coffee/Cafe – Birch Coffee (runner-up was Stumptown and then Blue Dog Cafe)

Best Brunch – The Breslin (runner-up was Penelope and then Almond)

Best Pizza – A tie between Eataly’s La Pizza AND Patsy’s (followed by Waldy’s)

Best Indian – Tamarind (runner up was Chennai Garden and then Dhaba)

Best Takeaway Lunch – No. 7 Sub (runner-up was Birch and then ‘wichcraft)

Sometimes these surveys come down to who can rally their fans to vote for them, and there was certainly some of that evidenced in voting patterns. But overall, all of these restaurants are quite good, and definitely worth stopping by.

Flatiron neighborhood restaurants (and newcomers this year) ABC Kitchen and Nuela both had entrees included in the Best 15 Dishes of 2010 by restaurant critic Sam Sifton of the New york Times.

For Jean George’s ABC Kitchen (35 East 18th Street between Broadway and Park), it was Chef Dan Kluger’s Black Sea Bass that grabbed Sifton’s attention and made the list.

At Nuela (43 West 24th Street between 5th and 6th Avenue), the Arroz con Pato, which is basically a paella with a duck breast, duck egg, foie gras, duck confit and of course rice and vegetables, won over Sifton.
