Jue Lan Club restaurant opens up in old Limelight spot in the Flatiron

A new restaurant, the Jue Lan Club, has opened up in the old Limelight spot at 49 West 20th Street (near 6th Avenue) in the Flatiron. While the old and infamous Limelight dance club is long gone, Jue Lan Club is the latest in a string of attempts to remake the space into something interesting and successful. The Limelight marketplace (now Limelight Shops) is in there, a Grimaldis, and a couple of failed restaurants (Todd English’s Château Cherbuliez and Crossbar) have come before.

Jue Lan Club pays homage to the Limelight club, with photos from the wild club days and an emphasis on music and interesting art/graffiti in the restaurant’s 7 unique rooms. It gets its name from the Jue Lan Society, a group of avant garde artists in Shanghai in the 1930’s. The menu is contemporary Chinese, with a selection of raw items, dim sum, noodles and rice and more hearty main courses. You can see the dinner menu at Interestingly, the chef is Oscar A. Toro, who is of Cuban/Colombian background but has cooked in restaurants from the Four Season Hotel’s Fountain Restaurant, Le Bec Fin in Philadelphia, Asiate, Del Posto, Sushi Samba, to Buddakan.

They serve lunch and dinner weekdays, and a Dim Sum Brunch and dinner on the weekends.

We have not eaten at Jue Lan Club, but will review the food if and when we do.

Recent shootings in the Flatiron and Nomad neighborhoods outside of clubs hit bystanders

pergola nycWe do not normally report on shootings in the Nomad/Flatiron area of New York City, because they have been pretty rare over the last decade. But last night a 21 year old woman was allegedly grazed by a bullet while waiting outside of Pergola Bar and ran for safety at the Nomad Hotel, according to CBS. Four men involved in the shooting reportedly fled in a black SUV. Hopefully they will find surveillance video of the crime.

This follows another shooting last month, when a 24-year old woman was shot and KILLED outside of Club Motivo (915 Broadway at 21st Street) in the Flatiron because some guy was reportedly thrown out of the club and went to get his gun. The woman (and single mom of a 3 year old) who was killed was a an unintended victim but may have known the shooter. Read the full story at

Brooklyn Roasting Company opens location just west of Madison Square Park

IMG_0339-400x300Brooklyn Roasting Company recently opened a location just west of Madison Square Park at 50 West 23rd Street (between 5th and 6th Avenue). The Flatiron location is their first in Manhattan and follows up on the success of their two Brooklyn locations.

One of their differentiating coffee beverages (and currently only available in this location) is their Nitrogen Cold Brew, a “cold-brew coffee infused with nitrogen gas” that is said to end up looking like a Guinness. We have not had one yet but will report back when we do.

They also serve donuts from Dough, and croissants and sandwiches from Margo Patisserie.

Brooklyn Roasting Company is open weekdays 7am-7pm and weekends 8am-7pm.

With the edition of Brooklyn Roasting Company and Toby’s Estate Coffee, we may have to bring up voting for Best Coffee in the Flatiron again at the end of this year.
