The Wall Street Journal reports that Ian Schrager and developer Durst Fetner Residential will partner up to turn the currently vacant lot at 855 Sixth Avenue (between 30th and 31st Street) into a Public Hotel and a rental apartment building. The hotel will be very close to other recently developed hotels such as the Ace Hotel (29th And Broadway), The Flatiron Hotel (26th And Broadway), the upcoming NoMad Hotel (Broadway and 28th), and the neighboring Eventi Hotel (30th and 6th).

The Public Hotel will take up the first 16 floors of the proposed 56 floor building, and the luxury apartment rentals will make up the upper floors.

The idea behind the Public brand is sophisticated stylish hotels at an affordable price (apparently $300/night according to Business Week.

This will be the first Public branded hotel in New York. There is currently one in Chicago.

The giant head photos are up now all over the NoMAD Hotel (1170 Broadway at 28th Street). It’s part of a street art movement that’s going on globally with the Inside Out art project. We Are NoMAD organized this particular effort at the NoMAD Hotel last week. The photos are all of NoMAD locals.

The NoMAD Hotel is under construction and due to open in early 2012.

Tomorrow at the yet to be completed NoMAD Hotel (1170 Broadway at 28th Street), NoMAD locals will be gathering to paste giant photos of themselves all over the outside of the hotel in a street art movement that’s going on globally as part of the Inside Out art project. We Are NoMAD is organizing this particular effort at the NoMAD Hotel, and they are meeting up from 6-8pm to paste away. Before you go crazy with your own photos, note that We Are NoMAD has already selected and printed those photos that will go up, since there is limited wall space.

But definitely come by 28th and Broadway at 6pm Friday to check out the pasting effort.

There is even an after-party at the NoMAD loft at 22 West 27th Street.

Following the recent openings of both the Ace Hotel and the MAve Hotel, another north-of-Madison-Square-Park boutique hotel, the NoMad, is slated to open in early 2010.
